BREVI CENNI STORICI DELLE SALINE

Documenti storici sulle origini ed I primi secoli di vita delle Saline sono pochi e   frammentari.. Sembra furono  i  Fenici  i  primi ad impiantare strutture per l’estrazione del sale marino nel Trapanese.

Da allora vari periodi di splendore si alternano con peiodi di decadenza nella vita delle  Saline   Questa storia lunga e tormentata dura per oltre duemila anni e si intreccia con la stessa storia della Sicilia,  ricca  e travagliata sopratutto per le numerose dominazion straniere che si sono succedute in Sicilia, posta al centro del Mediterraneo, la Sicilia che fu terra di conquista per molti popoli provenienti dall’Africa e da vari punti dell’Europa.. Si vuole qui solo ricordare che le alluvioni, le pestilenze, le guerre resero questa storia ancora piu’  complessa’.  Una storia che continua con alti e bassi come prima Societa’, per l’Amministrazione delle Saline, vengono create, abolite e ricostituite con nomi diversi.. Cooperative e consorzi che non durano.   Ma le Saline con i loro mulini, anche se ridotte di numero,  ed una produzione ridotta,  alcune  sono ancorali funzionanti,   producendo il buon  sale,  dandoci visioni perenni di incomparabile bellezza.  

Short History of the Sea Salt Mines of Trapani

Historic documents of the origin and the first centuries of the salt mines are few and fragmented. It seems the Fenici were the first to construct structures for the extraction of salt from the sea in the Trapani province. From the beginning, periods of splendor have been alternating with periods of decay in the life of the salt mines.

This history, long and tormented, has lasted for over two thousand years, intertwined with the same history of the island of Sicily. The island is rich and tormented because of all the numerous foreign dominations due to its location in the center of the Mediterranean land of conquest for many people coming from Europe and Africa. We want to mention here that these foreign influence along with natural phenomena, like floods and pestilences, make the history of Sicily even more complex and painful.

This history of the salt mines has continued for many centuries with ups and downs as  associations for the administration of the salt mine have been created, abolished, and again reconstituted with different names. Many cooperatives and consortiums have existed but with relatively short life.  The salt mines of Trapani, with the windmills, even reduced in number and output of salt, are still there functioning and producing the good salt and giving us perennial vision of incomparable beauty.
